English by Immersion

Here at EAV the teaching is international, with English by immersion at every grade level in our school. Bilingual education contributes to students’ cognitive and emotional development, from problem-solving to empathy.

We have an educational commitment to stimulate our students’ skills and ability to analyze and understand texts in English and Portuguese, numerical fluency, in addition to communication, critical thinking, and creativity.

We seek to integrate language teaching into students’ daily lives. Classroom experiences connect with the development of English, making the learning process more natural. Fluency occurs unconsciously from interaction with activities, projects developed in the language, and from living in an international environment.

Interdisciplinary Projects

We use the methodology of projects, working with a holistic vision of learning that stimulates the aptitudes, skills, and interests of each student so that they can develop an enthusiasm for self-knowledge and the world around them.

The reality of the world is complex and interconnected and in order to understand it it is essential that there is a dialogue between the subjects that are taught in the school.

Our faculty, from a problem situation, induces the student to question, produce, and experiment, making him actively participate in the learning process. Self-perception is a key characteristic of the EAV student, who understands the importance of his contribution to the construction of a more equal, better, and happier society.

International
& Brazilian
Curricula

The way of teaching and learning has changed a lot in the last few decades with combinations of integrated and flexible approaches to interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teaching and learning growing increasingly important for future global citizens.

EAV has chosen to adopt a number of internationally renowned curricula including Readers & Writers Workshop developed at Columbia University in the United States, Eureka Math a rigorous and widely used math curriculum both in the United States and Internationally. As well as the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) and IEYC (International Early Years Curriculum) launched by Fieldwork Education.

These programs provide an important bridge between the integration of our international curricular programs while meeting and often exceeding the BNCC (Common National Curriculum Base) Brazilian guidelines for content instruction. Further descriptions and details regarding these curricula can be found in the Pre-School, Elementary, and Middle-Highschool pages.

EAV also employs Brazilian Based curricula through Bernoulli for Portuguese, Geography, and History Instruction. All Curricula are aligned to BNCC guidelines and were selected to challenge students.

Technology
in the Classroom

The presence and use of technological resources in the classroom is one of the things that make Escola Americana de Vitória unique. Beginning in pre-school, students have classes in Computational Thinking, which introduces the basic concepts of programming, so that they begin developing digital fluency skills.

At EAV, all spaces were designed to promote learning, encourage exploration and play to stimulate the cognitive, social, emotional, linguistic and physical development of each student. Including our Innovation lab where Computational Thinking and tech related maker projects take place.

During these classes, we use Cubetto, a friendly robot that helps teach the basics of computer programming through practical exercises. Students learn math and logic concepts, problem solving strategies, project design and communication of ideas.

Additionally EAV sees technology as a crucial in class resource to create the most productive learning environments possible. In our Elementary classrooms (Grades 1-5), our teachers and students have access to chromebooks to incorporate the many learning tools and apps, like RAZ-Kids, that support learning in various contexts while at school.

In Middle and High school, every student is leased or can bring their own MacBook to facilitate learning. At EAV most of our curricular materials (ie. books) are online and so students access these resources through the MacBook computers that they take with them to every class

Language
Support
(ELL WIDA)

At EAV approximately 70-80% of our school day instruction is conducted in an immersive English language environment. Given this context we know that it is necessary to provide English Language support to families and students who are new and arriving to our school.

At EAV we have a team of ELL (English Language Learning) Teachers who provide additional language support both during the school day and afterschool to students who are still developing their English Language skills.

The ELL program at EAV begins in 1st Grade and supports ELL students up through 11th Grade. Entrance into this support program is based on the WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design Assessment) for English Language Learners.

This assessment is used in international schools across the globe to identify student English Language Levels for support purposes. Based on this assessment we then identify the appropriate level of support each child will receive from our ELL teachers until they are exited from the support program and fully prepared to accompany all of their classes.
